Conceived at the tail end of the fifties, the thinline semi-solid married the pre-rock’n’roll ‘jazzbox’ with the still-new solidbody to create an instrument that’s become a cornerstone of virtually any subsequent music style. Blues, jazz, rock’n’roll, rock, fusion… you name it, you can bet there’ll be a thinline semi in there somewhere.

While it might have been conceived in Kalamazoo, USA, the thinline semi concept has been used as a platform by virtually every contemporary maker. The Chandler 6 continues that tradition: a 400mm (15.75”) wide semi but with distinct off-set cutaways.

In typical Hutchins style, there are numerous original features, not least the longer 648mm (25.5”) scale length bringing its own harmonic resonance to the sound that’s known for its bright, clean attack. It also brings a firm-feeling string tension which makes it a breeze for dropped Eb tunings used by numerous contemporary players.

Another unique feature is the bound Blackwood Tec fingerboard: hugely resilient, strong and stable with a very rosewood-like appearance. It’s also an eco-friendly material which like the Chandler 6’s laminate maple construction has zero impact on our declining rain forests.

At the heart of the Chandler 6 is a more classic centre block to which the dual humbuckers, tune-o-matic bridge and trapeze tailpiece are mounted. The vintage-voiced humbuckers combine quite classic low output with dual rows of adjustable pole pieces. Another Hutchins trait is evidenced by the placement of the bridge pickup, slightly further from the bridge than many, for a less brittle and brash attack. Its controls reference the original with a three-way toggle switch pickup selector and volume and tone for each pickup.

The design produces a relatively light weight guitar (approx. 3.2kg) – so many modern semis feel more like solidbodies; not here. The conventional strap button placement on the upper horn also provides a difference to those semis which have it positioned behind the heel. Subtle, yes, but on a strap the Chandler 6 is perfectly balanced and feels less bulky that the style suggests. It’s a player from the off.

Another area where the ‘Hutchins Effect’ comes to the fore is the set-up and overall playability. From the classic rounded oval neck profile through the bone nut, high polished, smooth and finely fitted medium gauge frets, along with a dual action truss rod and that fully adjustable bridge, personal set-ups are easy to facilitate for the more experienced player.

But none of this matters unless the guitar sounds good. Right out of its classy gigbag the Chandler 6 is ready to go. There’s a fulsome acoustic ring and plugged in there’s that unmistakable semi voice that always seems more alive, less direct than a solidbody with less midrange and expanded highs and lows. It’s certainly easy to dial in a jazz/blues voice that retains clarity and depth from the neck pickup. The twin pickup mix adds more hollowness and rockabilly sparkle while the bridge has just enough power to drive your amp into light crunch if you need. But the truth is that a semi like this works in so many styles: fifties jazz and blues, rockabilly, sixties jangle, Brit-pop crunch (be it the Beatles, Kinks or Oasis), Foo Fighter’s bluster or Bonamassa power-blues. And that’s just scratching the surface…
