Gary and Luke met through a mutual musician friend, Matt English, in Brighton. At the time the then Kooks bass player, Max Rafferty, was playing a Hutchins bass. While rehearsing in Brighton Gary met up with the band and showed Luke the prototype of the Mint Memphis.
Luke loved the unusual colour and the tone of the guitar and so Gary agreed to make him a special mint Memphis with the initials Luke in mother of pearl impressed in the fretboard. Luke is seen holding the Memphis on the cover of the picture single, Always Where I Need To Be.
